Finding Success

——————————————————–

A few years ago, I never dreamed that I would be a blogger. The thought simply had not occurred to me. Yet here, I am, a little more than a year into my blogging journey. It has opened up a whole new world for me, a place to write and an incredible community of fellow bloggers.

The stories of bloggers who have become extremely successful in their niche and make the big bucks are amazing.  My blog, Closing Time, is really just a tiny little dot in cyberspace. If my feelings were linked to the roller coaster ride of my blog’s stats, I would be in a constant state of emotional whiplash!

Let’s imagine for a moment though, that my blog becomes a huge success. My page hits go through the roof. Subscribers grow exponentially. The advertisers are begging for a 125 pixel square. I become a big blogger.

Will I be satisfied?

When does fulfillment come? With 100 subscribers? 500? 5000?

In my opinion…never.

See, I think success in blogging is just like success in anything else. Success is a good thing, and we are called to do everything as unto the Lord. But if our identity is rooted in being a blogger, we are in trouble.

As a follower of Jesus, I must be grounded in who I am in Him. I don’t need to look at the numbers to find my worth. As much as I enjoy comments from my readers, they don’t bring true fulfillment. No matter how far I go in blogging, success in the blogging world is not going to make me happy. I would feel terribly empty, even in the midst of great success, if I was not confident of my identity as a child of God.

I want to encourage you today, fellow Christian bloggers. Yes, we blog. Many of us love it. But let’s not allow ourselves to fall into the trap of believing that our worth is based on it. Hold fast to our God. Cling to Him, and dig into His Word. Know who you are in Him. Because not a single thing about blogging can compare to that.

Blogging is a gift, an incredible opportunity to impact to a far greater circle than we could ever touch in person. My blog may be huge someday, or it may not. I am trusting that one to the Lord, and I’m truly content to follow whatever path He has.

The most important thing is that I am His.

Hold fast to Him. Dig into His word. Blogging is a gift and a ministry.

Thank you for saying this today!

I had to go cold turkey from looking at the stats – every now & again you get a email from someone saying what your blog means to them & that email one email is worth thousands of visitors if you have challenged or inspired 1heart to grow closer to God.

Amen, Erin! Thanks for this reminder. I have been reflecting lately on why I write and it is mostly understand myself and my Lord and our relationship. The comments and followers are encouraging, yes! But I want to be content whether the conversation with readers grows or shrinks back to a private one between me and Him!

Great thing to keep in mind! I struggle with wishing I had more followers BUT then I have times where I don’t even have time to get on so I’m relieved I don’t have lots of people reading and waiting! I love blogging and reading other’s blogs and this site – Gather Inspirit – has been a new favorite of mine. Thanks for posting this!

Erin, this is wonderful advice for all us. Like you, I never would have imagined myself blogging and didn’t really know it existed until a short time ago. It’s easy to get into comparing when visiting other blogs. But, my hope is that in blogging and in life I can say I finished the course set out for me.

Amen, Erin! I know I have become too consumed with blog stats, comments, and the like. Every day I say a prayer and remind myself for whom I am writing. You spoke straight to my heart!

Thanks for the reminder of where our success comes from!! Too often, we get caught up in what we do instead of who we are in Christ! :)

Good post Erin! I got rid of my “followers” because I found myself looking over there too often! I love you wrote, “But let’s not allow ourselves to fall into the trap of believing that our worth is based on it”.

I wish everyone read this daily before they got online!!

Great words! Guess I should take my stats page and actually close it instead of hitting refresh every day huh? The problem is now I’ve passed it on to my husband – both blogging and stat counting! I’ve heard come from both of our mouths – “let me check my stats and I’ll be ready for bed!” Yikes!

Thanks for the foundational reminder!

Oh my friend … you know that my heart beats the same as yours on this topic. Thank you for a “word aptly spoken” (Proverbs 25:11).
