The Power Of Words

by Marci on June 22, 2010

As bloggers, we use words to convey our thoughts, ideas, feelings and messages.  Sometimes, our words are carefully chosen.  Other times, we just need to get a post up and we throw some words together and call it good!    Have you ever thought about your words?  Have you thought about what they really are and what they can do?  Do you know what the Bible says about them?  There is great power in words.  After all, God spoke and the world was created. Jesus spoke to the storm and it ceased.  God’s words still have that same power and our words have power, also.   Here are a few verses and thoughts that have been going through my head and heart lately.

The tongue has the power of life and death…” Proverbs 18:21. —-How am I using this power?

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Ephesians 4:29 —-Am I building other’s up with my words?  Am I being a benefit to them?

Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing  Proverbs 12:18 —-I pray that my words are healing, soothing words and not hurtful.

But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted (justified), and by your words you will be condemned. Matthew 12:36-37 —-Do I carelessly throw words around trying to be funny or sarcastic without thinking about what they really can do?

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.  Psalms 19:14 —-This is my prayer, oh Lord!

I want to be a conscious blogger – conscious of my words.  Even though my blog is not an evangelistic blog, I still write from a Christian perspective and realize that I don’t have to be preaching all the time to be that salt and light.  The word says that the world will know us by our fruits.  Our words are a type of fruit.  They are powerful fruit that everyone can see everyday.  They can see if they are uplifting and life-giving or negative and life-taking.

Think about your words this week.  Not just on your blogs, but on facebook and twitter, on chats and email, and in daily conversations.  Make a conscious effort to use your power to give life!

Marci, I love this… I try to be as fruitful as possible but sometimes things slip. I have to add something here… sometimes ignoring and not responding online is NOT fruitful as well. As a Christian we should forgive and forget, we should not ignore others… I’m pretty good at that until people ignore or don’t respond. Then it sucks life out of me. So I believe as a Christian even if we are upset with someone we must break away from that, talk to the source or pray and forgive. Or just take time to say hello. Just my two cents! Now that I babbled, awesome post! lol

Love it – so true… there are so many examples of bloggers touching a life countries away, someone they have not even met, just because of the power of an encouraging and uplifting word… I believe therein lies some of the power behind blogging and writing :) great post!

Marci, thank you for such excellent thoughts! It is so easy to not think our words through, both in real life and in blogging. And Chele, your comment hit me hard too…I really struggle with keeping up with online comments, etc (not because I’m upset, but because I’m just busy). Something I need to think about!!

thanks marci, wonderful exhortation!

I’ve recently come across some really ‘snarky’ blogs that get a LOT of traffic most likely because of their style and approach. I wonder why it’s so attractive to the masses to get caught up in that type of meaningless (and sometimes hurtful to others) banter??

Anyhow, I really appreciate your thoughts here and it’s spurred me on to coninue being true to my voice and remember WHO it represents in addition to myself even on my blog.

I often try to think to myself…is this ‘whatever’ type talk…(phil 4:8)
in my blogging and real life interactions.

Iknow as a Christian it is sometimes hard and sometimes easy to say what I mean without sounding like a bible basher. Evenin anger I attempt to remain Christ like, for the word says be angry and sin not.. sometimes that is much harder then it should be..

good writing.
Lord help us all to be wise with our words and our actions towards others, we might be the only ‘word of the Lord’ some people experience.
